There are two independent houses on site situated to the rear of the school. One of the houses at present has three boys living there. The other house is due to open before Christmas and will have two boys in it. The idea of the houses is that the boys start to live independently. The houses are given a weekly budget and the boys learn how to manage that budget by planning their meals and doing weekly shopping, to ensure they have all that is necessary to run the house. They take responsibility for doing their own washing and cleaning. They also can plan trips out to the cinema or bowling but they have to ensure that the budget allows this.
The criteria for being selected for the houses is quite strict. The boys must have a good attendance record and their behaviour both during the school day and during care time be at a level where they can be trusted to independently carry out domestic tasks. Candidates are discussed in care meetings and boys are invited for an evening to see how they get on. Some boys maybe ready for the houses earlier than others so it does not depend on which year the boy is in.
