The Lower School is designed to cater for pupils within a safe and nurturing environment which enables their transition to the middle and upper school to be determined by their personal and social development rather than age.
There can be as many as 12 boys from year 4, 5, 6 and 7 in Lower School, split into 2 classes with a teacher and teaching assistant in each one.. Our school day starts at 09:00 and finishes at 16:00.
During our school day two of us spend some of our time in the “Right Start” room. We are “Learning to Learn”. We practise our Literacy and Numeracy skills through play. We are also developing our skills to cope with our emotional challenges through a number of PSHRE based games, crafts and group activities. We are learning to build relationships to enable us to rejoin our class group on a full time basis. We are supported through our learning journey by Emma and Belinda.
The Pupils spend most of our time with the teacher in the classroom.
During a typical school day we learn all subjects from the National Curriculum. Our class teacher teach us the core subjects including: Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Humanities, CPSHRE and every term we practise these skills learning through a project.
We visit other specialist teachers around the school for Art, ICT, Food Technology, Design and Technology and P.E.
We also participate in Music and drama session with companies called “Kandu” and “Unique Voice”. On a Tuesday one of us visits a local farm learning new skills with a member of staff.
There are also daily sessions for some of us to have intense one-to-one sessions to build on our Literacy and Numeracy skills with our teaching staff.
During the school day we are encouraged to make “good choices”, so that we are learning new skills and making progress. As a reward for this we are allocated points for the efforts we make.
After our school day we are greeted by our care team. Our points for the school day determines the activity we are offered during our evenings. So the more points we earn the greater the choice of activities.
